This scheme comprised the design and build of a 140-seat chapel and crematorium plus a second building housing a waiting area and associated landscaping to create a memorial garden, footpaths, a car park, plus water features, including an infinity pool and reflection pools.
The chapel is steel framed with a high-quality finish and bespoke joinery featuring slatted timber ceilings, specialist glazing around the building to provide further natural light and a bespoke glazed timber screen with plantation shutters, which separate the entrance foyer and the chapel.
Located in open ‘Green Belt’ countryside, the building was designed to minimise visual and environmental impact. A sustainable green roof was installed with planting and roof lights, which is sympathetic to the landscaping and adjacent fields. A new tree-lined road was constructed to access the facility.
During the project, we assisted in fundraising for the village’s Poppy campaign, and engaged with the local primary school to arrange educational site visits.
The mechanical and electrical installations comprised mechanical ventilation and heating and cooling systems throughout the new building. Final coordination of building services and commissioning with the client’s directly supplied cremation equipment was vital to the sequencing of works and the ultimate successful delivery of the project.
We formed a lengthy access road from the highway across the site to reach the location of the new crematorium and completed the finishes as part of a significant feature landscaping design that spanned several acres. Two reflection pools were incorporated into the design, which were set adjacent to the new building with gabion baskets dressing the approach.
