Undertaken in partnership with Wilson Bowden and Derby City Council, this project included the full repair and alteration of a Grade II Listed Magistrates Court into offices, a local studies library, a cafe, meeting rooms, plus associated storage and services facilities. Works also included the provision of a mezzanine, external facade refurbishment and landscaping.
Architectural features, rich in heritage, include a ground-floor entrance hall with a swept double stair with elaborate bronze balustrades. The main stairwell and waiting area feature polished stone panelling and moulded cornices, and the courtrooms have patterned ceilings and cornices - with the majority of the fittings being original. The judges’ room has wooden panelling, pendant lamps, a polished stone fireplace, and a cross-beam ceiling.
Prior to the commencement of works, we completed the full demolition and ground remediation works of the adjacent former police headquarters site including the provision of stockpiled material for the future phase of the works.
With the building located in close proximity to the River Derwent, the design incorporated significant flood defence measures including demountable systems and tanked areas.
The project included the full strip-out of all redundant services and installation of new services, including a gas-fired hot water heating system, as well as ventilation systems for the building’s café and comfort cooling for the conference room.
The magistrates’ court dates to the 1930s and is protected with Grade II Listed status. Our site team worked carefully at every stage of the restoration, engaging closely with conservation specialists, our client, and specialist subcontractors to ensure a sensitive yet comprehensive transformation including significant conservation works to the building’s historic features - such as marble and metal work - which feature strongly in the completed design.
