Design and Build

Clegg worked with the Inspire Education Group (IEG) on the design and build of a three-storey Centre for Green Technology, which is being constructed at Peterborough College’s main campus.

The 2,300sqm, state-of-the-art building houses a building services engineering lab, a motor vehicles lab, workshops, classrooms, staff facilities and electric vehicle ramps, supporting a curriculum covering topics such as emerging construction technologies and electric vehicle technology.

Foundation/Frame/Envelope

The building incorporates a reinforced, in-situ concrete frame atop CFA piling, with a combination of masonry façade and feature façade with brise soleil and vertical fins designed to maximise daylight whilst minimising heat loss and gain.

Site Challenges

With this being a live and busy educational setting, with public access, and lessons and exams to consider, the safety and wellbeing of students, staff and visitors is at the forefront of our approach. We continue to work closely with Peterborough College and Inspire Education Group to minimise the impact of our works in a range of ways, including undertaking disruptive works outside of term time, implementing noise, dust and vibration minimisation techniques,
and altering our programme to accommodate the College’s changing schedule of events and activities.

Services

The EV workshops and other facilities require our building services to connect into both new and relocated client-supplied equipment. Throughout the scheme we have held workshops with IEG’s operational team to ensure that the design infrastructure can support the intended fit out, which includes power distribution, data requirements water, compressed air, heating, lighting, ventilation, and cooling - plus physical support such as plinths, pits and other builder’s working connection (BWIC). The building’s total energy demand will be met through the use of on-site renewable energy sources, such as air source heat pumps, minimising its environmental footprint. It is forecast to achieve BREEAM ‘Very Good’.

Social Value & Environment

This has been a highly popular project, with Clegg welcoming and arranging multiple visits from students, staff, client representatives, members of parliament, and community groups. The site team gave local residents and job centre claimants the opportunity to tour this project
as part of Open Doors Week - an industry initiative showcasing the career opportunities that construction has to offer.
Engagement with the College has included providing a work experience placement for a Level 1 Construction student and sponsoring her CSCS test, hosting informative ‘gate talks’, and donating waste materials to College’s construction department.

"Clegg's have been a brilliant construction partner throughout this project. From the moment they came onboard they have worked in collaboration to deliver VE savings without impacting the quality of the build and have worked closely with our student body to provide learning opportunities and add value to the wider college"
