Rushcliffe Spencer Academy Sixth Form Centre, Nottingham

Sector:

Education

Location:

Nottingham

Value:

£3.5 Million

Scope:

Design & Build

Clegg managed the design and build of a new sixth-form centre for the expanding Rushcliffe School (now Rushcliffe Spencer Academy) in Nottingham. The scheme comprised the construction of new classrooms to accommodate 300 pupils. Areas include a Sixth Form Office, social areas, teaching space, ICT study facilities, plus all new external works.

Foundation/Frame/Envelope

The building is a steel-framed structure incorporating exposed elements of precast concrete flooring to maintain a high exposed thermal mass for energy efficiency. A structural masonry inner skin was designed to provide support and restraint to the varying external materials, whilst secondary steelwork provided the required support for brise soleil and other louvre and glazing elements.

Site Challenges

Works were undertaken within a live educational environment. We worked hard to deliver the project safely, on time and to budget whilst minimising disruption to the school, including the re-temporary routing of a footpath through the car park.

Regular meetings were held with the school and the maintenance team to coordinate deliveries and to understand when ‘quiet periods’ were required for exams, etc.

The scheme required the temporary relocation of a bus stop used by pupils. We arranged this with the bus company and Nottinghamshire County Council, reinstating the original stop as soon as possible

Services

A fabric-first approach was adopted to improve the new building’s U-values and lower air leakage rates. Services installed included energy-efficient condensing boilers, local heating control, local hot water generation, low-maintenance LED lighting, automatic lighting controls, and passive ventilation and air quality control in classrooms. Brise soleil installed along the building’s south-facing façade provides solar shading.

Environment and Social Value

New trees were planted to increase biodiversity on site, with existing high-quality tree specimens protected throughout the scheme.

A trainee member of Clegg’s site team delivered a careers presentation to pupils to help encourage more young people to consider working in the construction industry.

"The perfect contractor..."

“Clegg were the perfect contractor for this project. Not only did they embrace their commitment in a proactive way, their site manager became part of the school team and was as sensitive and aware of the proximity of the children as was any teacher or parent.”
