Clegg was appointed by Rise Homes to manage the design and construction of a 11-storey Build-To-Rent development comprising 229 one and two-bedroom apartments plus shared amenities including a rooftop garden, an external courtyard, a communal lounge, workstations, and a multimedia room.
The building incorporates contiguous piled retaining walls, in situ concrete and hot rolled lower structures that allowed the use of lightweight metal framing system for upper floors. The elevations are a mix of traditional brickwork and innovative slip systems.
The development site is affected by a significant 8m slope between Scotland Street and Solly Street in the centre of Sheffield and is bound by existing structures. We addressed these challenges with the installation of a contiguous piled retaining wall with whaling beams and props prior to the installation of the lower frame and transfer deck.
An extensive pre-development archaeological dig unearthed bronze-age pottery fragments estimated to be circa 3500 years’ old. These were sent to a specialist for testing.
The building benefits from two biomass boilers providing heat source for hot water and apartment heating systems, and uses advanced diagnostics enabling the monitoring of temperature and flow rates of hot water into and out of every apartment, enhancing the efficiency of the system.
The scheme is also designed with a full sprinkler installation.
The development - which is one of few BTR schemes in Sheffield - offers modern and affordable accommodation that benefits from a highly sustainable building services strategy.
