Burcot Lodge Care Home comprises 54 en-suite rooms and associated facilities including day rooms, life skills kitchens, a hairdressing salon, and extensive landscaped gardens. The project marked the second undertaken by Clegg in partnership with Cinnamon Care Collection following the delivery of the client’s Cedar Mews complex in Birstall, Leicestershire, in 2017.
The new building was designed to complement the existing accommodation, an extended country-style Victorian House, and is a two-storey load-bearing masonry structure with localised steel transfer elements. Pre-cast concrete planks make up the first floor, while a suspended beam and block floor system combined with a ground-bearing slab make up the bottom floor. The roof structure comprises sections of pitched roofs formed with timber trusses and sections of flat roof. The foundation solution is comprised of traditional mass concrete strip footings.
Heating was provided via a gas-fired heating system servicing radiators throughout the care home. A fabric-first approach was implemented through improved U-values and reducing heat loss by minimising air leakage.
We also incorporated modular plumbing solutions to repeat bedroom en-suites, improving quality, speed and time certainty.
The existing home remained open during the year-long programme; with Clegg implementing noise, dust and vibration reduction measures to ensure minimal disruption to residents and staff.
The new facility, which designed for residents with specific care needs, including dementia, opened in autumn 2017.
Whilst on site, we assisted with the home’s annual charity fête, including providing signage, carrying out general repairs, assisting in traffic management, and contributing raffle prizes. We also organised a time capsule event with the nearby Blackwell First Junior School.
