Sky's the limit for BBC Radio Derby

29 May 2017

A BBC radio station broadcast live from the top of a 30-metre crane on the site of new student flats being built in Derby by Clegg Construction.

Heidi Booth, a journalist from BBC Radio Derby sat in the cabin of the crane and broadcast intermittently throughout the breakfast show on Friday morning.

She was accompanied by a member of staff from Clegg Construction and PAW, the company that is providing the steel frame for the project.

Dave Swift, Contracts Manager at the Agard Street site, said: “Radio Derby approached us about doing a live broadcast from the top of the crane as their studios are close to the Agard Street site.
Greg Newbold from Clegg Construction and Richard Ferry from PAW Structures ascended the master of the crane with Heidi and she broadcast live intermittently throughout the breakfast show. It was quite unusual and I’ve never been involved with something that involved so many risk assessments but it went really well. We were pleased to be involved and would like to thank Radio Derby for their interest.”

Clegg Construction is building 244 bedrooms for students in Agard Street, in the heart of Derby’s historic Friar Gate quarter.

The building will comprise of en-suite rooms based around a series of communal areas featuring kitchen, dining and lounge areas.

Outside there will be cycle parking provision for up to 50 bikes, landscaping and pedestrian access points from both Agard Street and Friar Gate.

The accommodation is being constructed next door to the University of Derby’s Law School, which is situated in the One Friar Gate building, also built by Clegg Construction. A temporary site office has been set up in a former shop in Friar Gate.
