Florence Boot Hall project Highly Commended in East Midlands Energy Efficiency Awards 2023

04 May 2023

A highly sustainable, £10.2m renovation scheme that will provide University of Nottingham(UoN) students with accessible, comfortable and modern accommodation facilities has been Highly Commended in the Large-Scale Project of the Year category at this year’s East Midlands Energy Efficiency Awards – scooping second place out of seven nominees.

The Florence Boot Hall project, which is being undertaken by Clegg Construction at University Park – UoN’s largest campus - has been recognised for its fabric-first approach, which is forecast to deliver considerable benefits in terms of energy and carbon savings, including a reduction of 380 tonnes of CO2 per year (the equivalent of 47.9 homes’ energy use for one year) and significantly improved Energy Performance Asset rating, increasing from E to B.

A range of energy efficiency measures have been implemented to help improve the thermal and low carbon efficiency within the 1920s-constructed building, which is steeped in history having been founded by businesswoman and philanthropist, Florence Boot, wife of Boots the Chemist founder Jesse Boot. These include:
  • Air-source heat pumps
  • A Building Management System
  • Upgrades to roof insulation
  • LED lighting
  • 380 new triple-glazed windows
The scheme, which is targeted and forecast to achieve BREEAM ‘Very Good’, is due to complete in summer 2023 for the new intake of students, and will contribute to UoN’s carbon management plan to be net zero by 2040.

About the Energy Efficiency Awards

Launched in 2013, the Energy Efficiency Awards aim to provide public recognition for the excellent work the energy efficiency sector is doing in undertaking energy efficiency schemes that help cut carbon emissions and reduce fuel poverty, and to help encourage best practice within the energy industry as it works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They are held on a regional and national basis each year.

The awards ceremony for the East Midlands awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd May at the Radisson Blu East Midlands Airport Hotel.
